Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), DoD and the PTACs

RFID is a truly transformational technology that is playing a vital role in achieving DoD's vision for implementing knowledge-enabled logistic support to the warfighter through fully automated visibility and management of assets. Their goal is to employ mature and emerging supply chain technologies to optimize the supply chain - use of RFID as an integral part of a comprehensive suite of Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) technology will facilitate accurate, hands-free data capture in support of DoD's business processes in an integrated end-to-end supply chain enterprise.

The PTACs are DoD's official outreach for training small business with regard to DoD RFID requirements.  Call your nearest PTAC for information on their RFID class schedule or to arrange for some one-on-one help.

Item Unique Identification (IUID)

Item Unique Identification (IUID) is a system of marking items delivered to the Department of Defense with Unique Item Identifiers (UIIs). A UII is a set of data for tangible assets that is globally unique and unambiguous, is marked in machine-readable format, and ensures data integrity and data quality throughout the item’s life.  IUID requirements were established in 2003 by policy signed by Mr. Michael Wynne in his role as Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition Technology and Logistics, and subsequent policy and regulation.

The purpose and objectives of IUID include helping to streamline the DoD Supply Chain by improving logistics, contracting and financial transactions and compliance with the Chief Financial Officers Act. IUID benefits include improved item acquisition, repair, and disposition. IUID data enables reliable and accurate data for logistics, maintenance, financial accountability and other DoD business intelligence systems. IUID is a critical enabler to increasing asset visibility and improving mission readiness.
